Chad was a crucial influence during my formative years. He gave me his time, food, and guidance countless times. At his house, Chad led a group bible study for my friends and I that he named “The Iron Man Society.” The name comes from Proverbs 27:17 — “ As Iron sharpens Iron, So one man sharpens another.” His intention was to create a space where we could strengthen ourselves and each other through study, conversation, and holding each other accountable.
As an authority figure he was unique. His guidance was easy to accept because it came from a trust he cultivated by being open, honest, and vulnerable. If we had doubts, we were encouraged to investigate rather than suppress them.
Joy was also taken very seriously and we laughed often! Laughs came from the belly and things got so silly there were often tears. When I think of Chad, his smile and laughter seem the most vivid. My love for him was brotherly; I regret that we drifted apart over the years, but I am eternally grateful for the life he lived.

We remember having Chad in our home in Wahpeton when he was raising funds to do ministry full time. His heart of love for our Lord was unstoppable. Working with him a Okoboji Lutheran Bible Camp was a pleasure. Watching him marry and have kids was just a joy. We have prayed through the hard times and will continue to pray for the comfort, support and life of all his loved ones who are left to live without him. Please know he will not be forgotten.

I remember Chad for his courageous and outspoken faith in Jesus, and his leadership in Campus Crusade (Navigators) while at UNI. I loved his awesome smile that did light up a room, when he entered and he had an awesome way of making each person he interacted with feel special and known. I remember Chad, receiving the first Sigma Phi Epsilon "Balanced Man Scholarship" award before his freshman year at UNI and he embodied the character traits of Sig Ep which are; VIRTUE, DILIGENCE, and BROTHERLY LOVE DAILY with all those he interacted with and his brothers of Sig Ep at UNI. My heartfelt prayers and deepest sympathy to Chad's family and his 4 children and their mother, Chad's father, and his siblings.

I’ve pondered what to say, even how...There are no words adequate to express the sadness we feel at Chad’s passing. It has been some time since we spoke; but as I think back over the years, so many memories include him. High school, UNI, FCA, songs in the Noehren Hall basement, growing up and growing as followers of Christ, and laughing through nearly all of it. I am grateful to have these memories and look forward to the day we can catch up once again on that far brighter shore. Rest easy, my friend. When I heard the news of J Chad's passing, it was heart-wrenching. He was my spiritual father. Before my arrival on the UNI campus, my faith lacked boldness and depth. J Chad instilled both through his investment of discipleship over the course of the 2 years we shared together on campus. I remember a conversation among some friends when he posed the question, "Which would you prefer, to experience fun times, or to experience meaningful times?" Every interaction with J Chad afforded both. Perhaps my favorite story of J Chad came by way of an upperclassman. One evening, just before heading home after a night of studying, he happened upon J Chad studying alone in a classroom in the basement of the Curris Business Building. A stack of closed Finance texts stood beside him. On the table in front of him sat an open Bible. When my friend asked what he was doing, J Chad excitedly responded, "That apostle Paul REALLY had it together!".

It's hard to believe some things can be true, and this is one of those things. The loss this is to Chad's family, to the earthly church and to our community is overwhelming, and our hearts are a little darker today because of his 'forever' absence from our lives. Chad was a true and genuine beacon of God's light and love, and was a tool whom God used so many times to bring so many to Himself, knowing that Chad would willingly answer His call to help build the kingdom of God on earth. But as the Rev. Billy Graham once said of the day when he would be reunited with the living God who created him, "I will be more alive than I am now; I'll just have a change of address." And so it is now with Chad. The after-effects of Chad's earthly life will continue to ripple quietly on; we will remember--maybe even shed a tear; but we will never be the same. "Well done, my good and faithful servant." (Matthew 25:21)

We have lots of great memories of Chad: attending many youth sporting events with Chad, he and Jeff often coaching together, his natural talent at being an announcer at youth football games when he wasn't coaching (and making the crowd giggle while making the players feel special), all of the nicknames he had for people, the way he could make us smile and laugh, the times he led us in prayer before a meal, the way he would go out of his way to help others, and certainly we will remember how proud he was of his 4 children and his deep love for them. I am so sorry for your loss and am praying for God’s peace to overwhelm you during this time. Chad was the person God used to lead me to Christ. It was not an easy process my heart was hard but Chad wouldn’t give up on what he had been called to do. He answered tough questions with love and grace. Every Thursday he would wait for me at the Union and bug me about going to BASIC and eventually I gave in so he’d leave me alone. He showed me the love of Christ but also showed me that following Jesus could be fun. What I would give to see him come face to face with Jesus! Praying for you all!
