Obituary of Gilbert Korwes

A funeral service for Gilbert Korwes, age 90, of Spirit Lake, will be held Tuesday, December 22, 2020 at 10:30 am at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Spirit Lake. Visitation will begin one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be at St. Margarets Cemetery in Spirit Lake. Gilbert Korwes, of Spirit Lake, passed away peacefully at Lakes Regional Healthcare Hospital on December 18th, 2020.  He was the husband of Mary Lou Korwes and they shared 64 years together.

Born in Roselle, Iowa in 1930 and was the youngest of twelve children.  He enlisted in the Navy and served during the Korean War.  Gil worked for the Illinois Central Railroad for 30 years and enjoyed his retirement working at Camp Foster. 

Gilbert was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Spirit Lake.  He was a member of the American Legion and the AMVETS.  As a younger man, Gil enjoyed fishing and playing golf.  In retirement, he enjoyed reading western novels, watching TV and was an all-around handy man.  He was never far from a TV when the Packers were playing and loved watching any kind of sports.  He and Mary Lou also enjoyed the occasional jaunt to the casino.

Gilbert is survived by his wife Mary Lou of Spirit Lake, his daughter Lisa Gear and son in law David from Rockwall, Texas and his twin granddaughters, Madison and Savannah.  Gilbert and Mary Lou frequently traveled to Texas to support his granddaughters.
