To the family of Joe La Padula........
It was a pleasure knowing Joe. He was a fine shipmate and friend. He was a kind and gentle man and a gentleman. Joe did more good accidentally than most folk do on purpose! Lois and I always enjoyed the fun times with Joe at our ship's reunions.
According to Lawrence E. Butterfield, Jr., who wrote the song Blank Check, a Veteran is a man or woman who, at one point in their life, wrote a blank check payable up to and including their life! Joe was a Veteran.......he wrote that blank check!
The Navy Fleet Reserve has a tradition called simply a Bell Ceremony. It goes like this:
IN MEMORIAM - STRIKE THE BELL
"The toll of the ship's bell reminds us of the reverence we owe to our departed Shipmates and to those who guard the honor of our country upon the sea, under the sea, in the air and upon foreign soil.
Let it be a reminder of the faith they confide in us. Let us not forget our obligations and in silence breathe a prayer for our departed Shipmate:
Senior Chief Yeoman Joseph G. La Padula"
What shall be my legacy now that my days are through? America, America, I gave my best for you.
II Timothy 4:7 says, "I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith".
CROSSING THE BAR
(Tennyson)
"Sunset and evening star,
And one clear call for me!
And may there be no moaning of the bar,
When I put out to sea.
But such a tide as moving seems asleep,
Too full for sound or foam,
When that which drew from out the boundless deep,
Turns again home.
Twilight and evening bell,
And after that the dark!
And may there be no sadness of farewell,
When I embark.
For though out our bourne of Time and Place,
The flood may bear me far.
I hope to see my Pilot face to face,
When I have crossed the bar".
"The grass withers, and the flower thereof falls away; But the word of the Lord
endures forever". 1 Peter 1:24, 25
"The Angel of death was waiting near,
Listen now and you will hear;
The snap of the flag, the volleys fall,
And the haunting sound of the bugle call":.

Shipmate Joe was a great friend and we had some hilarious times at the many Regional MidYears and Conventions we attended. Thank God I called him a couple of weeks ago and we had a nice visit. He said he could talk much because of his breathing problems so I told him to just listen, and I told him how much I missed seeing him the last year and how much he was loved by all of us who knew him. So long my friend, and may you rest in peace and tell Lucy I said hello. Love you Doris Fri

Uncle Joe was a great man, a lot of fun and joy to be around.
He made all the effort to share the last years of his life with his family (from coast to coast). That speaks volumes about the type of father, brother, son, husband, grandfather and uncle he truly was. We are all thankful for his commitment to family.
All our love and prayers:
