Hubert Henry Sternberg was born July 16, 1923 in Woodbine, Iowa and passed away in Milford, Iowa on January 8, 2014 at the age of 90. He was the second son of Ira and Blanche Sternberg. He graduated from Milford High School and attended Morningside College in Sioux City, Iowa. On June 23, 1946 he married "his cheerleader", Gerry Blum, and to this union three children were born. They made their home in Milford, Ogden, Iowa and Torrance, California before settling back in Milford for the last 47 years.
Hugh, a dairy farmer for many years, managed to find time to help others. He enjoyed helping young people in 4H and the saddle club. He was a 4H leader for 27 years, and devoted many hours to the Iowa Great Lakes Saddle Club, Kiwanis, Plus, Inc., and Union Memorial Church. At age 61 he took up running, and ran in 5K and 10K races until he was 80, receiving several medals in the Iowa Senior Olympics.
Growing up, Hugh developed a passion for dairy cattle, and took pride in the quality of his herd, passing this on to his children. Showing dairy cattle and horses was a family thing. Hugh enjoyed sharing in the activities of his children, and later on the grandkids. Gramps and Granny didn't miss very many ball games or horse shows, although they sometimes had a hard time with directions! "Hubert!!"
Hugh enjoyed time spent with friends and family, reading, traveling, and hunting and fishing. He developed many friendships through the church and the organizations that he gave his time and efforts to.
Hugh is survived by his children Scott (Pam) Sternberg of New Plymouth, ID and Beth (Dave) Sander of Milford, grandchildren Jessica Sander and Tyler (Ashley) Sander, great grandchild CJ Sander, sister Marilyn Whipkey, brother Ed Sternberg, various relatives, and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Gerry, daughter Jody, two grandsons, Benson and Jackson Sternberg, brother Jack and his wife Verna, brother-in-law Ralph Whipkey, and special friends Bob and Gwen Noble.
