When I decided to leave my job at the Treasurer's office and do foreign mission ministry Marie was one of my biggest encourages. I will always remember her kind words. I send my sympathy to her family.

Marie was a wonderful gracious woman who will be dearly missed by the community. She was the Dickinson County Treasurer for 36 years and served as a deputy in the treasurer's office prior to that for 25 years. Her knowledge of taxes was immense, and she continued to care about the county's finances up to her passing. I visited with Marie recently in her home and know this first hand.
Marie personally took care of many people through the years who were in nursing homes. I remember her saying she needed to drive to Hilltop to feed the old people when she was about 90 herself! Her church was important to her, and she served on many committees and taught Sunday School to decades of young children in Spirit Lake. I will also remember Marie for her love of her cats.
Politics inspired many lively talks with Marie! She had opinons, and she was not shy to articulate them. She followed the issues nationally, in Iowa, on down to the local level.
Marie was very helpful to me when I ran in my first election eight years ago. After I was elected, Marie stopped by the treasurer's office to see how we did things now. She was curious how we used technology and what had changed since she left office. She also helped me understand some of the more obscure treasurer duties such as stamped drainage warrants. Her insight was valued.
I will remember her as a special soul, always willing to go the extra mile to help someone, a very intelligent kind woman. She was sharp in wit and gentle in spirit. I am also sure she was welcomed into Heaven with the words, "Well done good and faithful servant!" My thoughts and prayers are with Marie's family.

Aunt Marie will be missed by many.
I am sure that on Monday morning when God and Jesus welcomed Aunt Marie into Heaven on Monday morning she was told "Well done good and faithful servant".
I have memories of coming to Spirit Lake as kids and visiting her in the family home and in the Treasurers office at the Dickinson County Courthouse.
My mom, Billie Stanley (Barrett) always enjoyed coming back to Spirit Lake for family visits, class reunions and attending church at the Methodist Church just down the street.
I am sure that Aunt Marie is singing with the angels today and enjoying being reunited with her family in heaven ...her parents Clara and Bill Barrett and her sister Aunt Helen Edmondson and Uncle Ed and my mom Carolyn "Billie" Stanley. They grew up in the family home they built in 1915 on 20th Street and they are now once again reunited in heaven.
I remember Aunt Marie teaching Sunday School for many years at the United Methodist Church in Spirit Lake and I am sure she made a difference in many of the lives she touched though those many years of teaching Sunday School.
The world needs more people like Aunt Marie... our earthly loss is Heavens gain and we all can take comfort that we will see her and the rest of the Barrett family again in Heaven one day.
My wife, Lori and I had the privilege of seeing Aunt Marie this past Saturday and Sunday while she was in the hospital. She never wanted anyone to feel sorry for her and she maintained a positive attitude of going back to the family home. While she didn't make it back to the physical family home, on Monday she did make it back to the family home in Heaven.
Aunt Marie thanks for being a great Aunt and a great member of the Spirit Lake community. We will continue to drive by the family home and remember what family is.
Love your nephew David Stanley

Marie was my kindergarten sunday school teach and later my mother worked for her in the Treasurer's office. She was always kind and had a positive attitude. I also remember she always had a Coke in her hand. RIP Marie. Thanks for making the world a little kinder and caring for a scared little girl in Sunday School.
