Obituary of Daniel Ostermann
Daniel Constant Ostermann died at Lakes Regional Hospital on October 27, 2009, after a long and courageous battle with Mylo Displastic Syndrome and congestive heart failure. He was born in Ocheyedan, Iowa, on November 18, 1925, to Gus and Redina (Bremer) Ostermann. He attended schools in the Ocheyedan area and in 1942 at the age of 16 went to Alaska with his father and two brothers. His father was one of the Iowa grading contractors hired for the Alcan Highway project. In 1944 Dan enlisted in the Navy, returning to Ocheyedan to complete his high school degree. He joined the family company of Gus Ostermann and Sons Inc., road builders. This company became Dan Ostermann Inc. in 1966. Dan retired in 1992.
In 1948 he married Harriet Cunningham of Worthington, Minnesota. They were the parents of three children, Constance (David) Parker of Shawnee, Kansas, Rhoda Ostermann (deceased), Bruce (Barbara) Ostermann of Worland, Wyoming and two step-grandsons, Carl and Alec Hampton, Worland, Wyoming.
He was a man of many hobbies and interests. He was a pilot, an accomplished photographer and a committed environmentalist, having been chosen as Conservation Farmer of the Year for Osceola County. Dan was a lifelong outdoorsman, loving fishing and hunting, supporting many sportsman organizations, including being a lifetime member of Ducks Unlimited and the National Rifle Association. He enjoyed trips all over the world pursuing fish of many species and passed his love of the outdoors along to his children and many others.
