Obituary of Ordell Franklin Romine
Ordell "Pete" Franklin Romine was born November 21, 1922 to Lester and Anna Sievert Romine at Galva, Iowa He attended country school through the eighth grade after which he stayed home to help his father farm.
On April 16, 1944 he was united in marriage to Wylma Hill at Estherville, Iowa
He served his country in WWII from July, 1944 to June 1946. He arrived on the front line of Germany on January 29, 1945 where he served as a rifleman. He was wounded on March 19 and returned to action in a few days. On March 29, 1945 he was severely wounded and taken to a field hospital, then transported back to the state by hospital ship. From there he spent the next year recovering from injuries at Brooks Army Medical Center. He received the Purple Heart and Cluster and was honorably discharged in June 1946. Pete was a member of the American Legion at Newell, Iowa until moving to Spirit Lake, there joining American Legion Post 23. He was also a life member of the VFW John W. Kidd Post 4514 in Spirit Lake.
Pete and Wylma started farming at Albert City in March of 1947. They were blessed with two daughters, Suzanne and Sandra. The family farmed at Albert City, moved to the Behrens farm at Newell in 1951 and retired to Spirit Lake in 1986.
He served his church as an usher for many years. He loved children, his lawn and garden, and a good game of cards. His girls learned at a young age that he would never just let them win.
Pete was called home to his Savior on June 1 after battling cancer for almost a year and a half. Surviving are his wife of 65 yeas, Wylma, and his daughter Sandra Gould and her husband Gary, all of Spirit Lake. Also surviving are his four grandsons, Stacey Akin and Terry of Benton, AR, Shane Akin and wife Erin of Milford, IA, Heath Halverson and wife Marie of Cedar Rapids, IA and Hunter Halverson and wife Angie of Austin, TX; five great grandchildren Amber, Riley, Bryce, Alex and Kelsey; his sisters, Edith and Delilah; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Lester and Anna, daughter, Suzanne and sisters, Marcella and Barbara.
