Obituary of Peter Harmsen
Peter Harmsen was born June 9, 1924 in Rock Valley, IA, the son of Walter and Marie (Noteboom) Harmsen. He graduated from Sheldon High School in Sheldon, IA and entered the Military Service (Army) from March 1943 through March 1946.
Peter was united in marriage to Leona Van Veldhuizen on June 18, 1946 in Sheldon, IA. He worked with his father in the Hospers Welding Shop at Hospers, IA. He farmed for six years. Then was employed with the Metz Baking Co. in Sheldon and Worthington, MN. He retired from Metz in 1981. He then was associated with the State Agency Real Estate for several years. They moved to Arnolds Park, IA in 1993. He was a member of the Westminster Presbyterian Church in Worthington, MN and served as an Elder.
Peter was an avid golfer and belonged to Sheldon Country Club, Worthington Country Club (where he was a member of the Worthington Club Board and served as president) and Emerald Hills Golf Club.
He was a member of the Bethel Reformed Church in Sheldon, Westminster Presbyterian Church in Worthington, MN and First Presbyterian Church in Spirit Lake, IA.
Peter passed away August 6, 2009 at Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls, SD at 85 years of age.
He is survived by a son and daugher-in-law, Brad and Jill Harmsen and their children, Michael and Megan; daughter and son-in-law, Barb and Doug Johnson and their children, Katie and Paul Johnson.
Peter was preceded in death by his wife, Leona and parents, Walter and Marie Harmsen.
