Obituary of H. Robert Fairchild

H. Robert (Bob) Fairchild was born November 2, 1930 at Terril, Iowa to Enos and Bess Fairchild. He received his education at Terril Community School, Estherville Junior College and Buena Vista College. On July 11, 1958 he was married to Mary Margaret Griffin at Terril. They lived in the Terril area where they farmed and he did crop adjusting for Farm Bureau. Bob served in the U. S. Army in Korea and was a member of the American Legion Walsh Post 432 of Terril. Bob loved attending any activity that his grandchildren were involved in, ballgames, concerts, science fairs, or even just practices. He was the "official team grandpa" for the state championship Graettinger-Terril basketball team. There was a time the junior high team wouldn't start a game until they all got a good luck hug from "Grandpa". In fact, Bob was considered the "Official Hugger" in 3 states. To know Bob was to love Bob. He died Monday, August 6, 2007 at his home after a short illness. He is survived by his children, Micki (Steve) Bradburn, Estherville, Spike (Roxanne) Fairchild, Arnolds Park; Sara (Dennis) Laidig, Terril; Susy (Keith) Ostrum, Spirit Lake; brother, Estel (Audrey) Fairchild, Spencer; sisters, Mary Louise Plautz, Iowa City, Jean Bridson, Storm Lake, Phylis (Keith) Bridson, Clive; grandchildren, Kara, Jaime, Laura, Brittany and Brandon Laidig, Maggie Ostrum, Cassie Fairchild, Jeremy Fairchild and Matthew Rudy; great grandchildren, Cameron and Vanessa Fairchild and many friends. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Mary, parents, Enos and Bess Fairchild, brother, Dan Fairchild and parents-in-law, Lloyd and Iva Griffin.
