Obituary of Shirley Caviness

A funeral service will be held Friday, January 25, 2013 at 10:30am at First Lutheran Church in West Okoboji. Visitation will be on Thursday, January 24th after 4:00pm with the family present from 5:00-7:00pm at the Turner Jenness Funeral Home in Milford. Burial at Milford Cemetery. Shirley Marie Caviness was born July 27, 1956, in Milford, Iowa, the daughter of Leland and Gwendolyn (Bundy) Miller. Shirley was raised and educated in Milford, graduating from Milford High School. Shirley was united in marriage to Thomas M. Caviness on June 24, 1978 in Milford, Iowa. The couple made their home in Milford, Iowa, where they raised their children, Courtney and Brett. Shirley's most cherished times were those spent with her children, family and friends. Whether over a cup of coffee, a game of Scrable or Farkle, Shirley was most happy surrounded by ones she loved. Shirley passed away Monday, January 21, 2013 at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD at fifty-six years of age. She is survived by her husband, Tom Caviness, of Milford; children, Courtney Caviness of Kyle, Texas and Brett Caviness of Palo Alto, California. Also surviving are her brothers, Lauren Miller of Spirit Lake, Tim Miller of Spencer and Terry Miller and his wife, Angie, of Brookings, South Dakota; sister-in-law, Pam Miller; nephews, nieces, other family and many friends. Preceding her in death are her parents, Leland and Gwen, and brothers, Larry and Dennis. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent in memory of Shirley to Tom, Courtney, or Brett. In addition to helping offset funeral and medical costs, a collective donation will be made to Pam Hoffman. Ms. Hoffman generously housed the Caviness family, who at the time were mere strangers to her, in her cozy Sioux Falls cottage so they could be near Shirley while she was in the hospital. Such a donation will help Ms. Hoffman house other families in need, just as she has selflessly done so many times before.
