When I came to work on that Wednesday morning and was asked if I had heard the news about Craig, I asked "What news?" They said Craig has passed away.........My first reaction was "NO WAY!" It must be a mistake, Craig was, as far as I was concerned, the picture of health, so anything other than an auto accident wasn't acceptable. So, in disbelief, I started out to the wind energy building. { I am the custodian for that building} On my way over, I noticed there were no student vehicles in the parking lot, all I saw were facility vehicles. My heart sank, as I drove to the building.
I walked inside and right away I knew something wasn't good. All the facility were standing in the hall, and by their faces I could tell the news of Craig was true. Shock set in with the disbelief and denial.
I had just saw Craig here last week. What on earth happened? I did notice signs on classrooms that said Craigs classes were cancelled, but I figured he was off to a class or conference getting more education or educating others so I didn't think anything of it.
I guess the shock, and denial will still be with me for some time, as it will be with others who knew Craig. I guess I still expect Craig to come beboping down the hallway with that big smile on his face looking like he was always on a mission, whether it was going to class, sharing a sudden idea or question with a coworker, or just going to lunch.
I always wondered why Craig never walked "normal". He was always just short of a gallop, but I think maybe it was his way of making the most of the short time he had here. He doubled and tripled his speed to make up for the time that was cut short, and believe me, it was hard to keep track of him. One second he was in his office, the next second he was in a class, or from one end of the building to the other. He wore me out watching him.
Craig, a man on a mission, a teacher, a student, friend, and coworker. Always a BIG smile, and awesome personality.
Now as I look around Craig's office, I see the new office chair he got a few weeks ago, still like new, since he was always on the move... file cabinets filled with books, everything from blue print reading ,electric power technology, rope systems, safety and hundreds more. A stack of business cards from contacts and customers, assorted coffee cups, pens and pencils, student papers, and a lone silent pencil lay next to his computer key board....
I couldn't figure out why Craig had 2 computers untill suddenly it came to me.. one computer wasn't fast enough for Craig, so he had to have 2 just to keep up with him......
A few personal touches-the thick heavy rug under his office chair, which he loved because he woud come and grab my vacuum if he happened to get some dirt or mud on it from being out at the turbine. I didn't have to worry about Craig's office getting too dirty, and he had no problem cleaning up his own mess. (Thanks Craig)....I also see a picture of a lone windmill, ( I don't remember the quote under it, but it was a really neat pic) ... I see a painted picture of a turbine that a student gave Craig.....his hard hat sits atop his desk, and his climbing gear hangs silently on the wall....
I guess the one treasure of Craig's that stands out the most for me, is his stack of ball caps sitting on his desk, On many occasion, Craig would appear out of nowhere, with a big smile on his face and a stack of caps in his hand begging me to pick one. ( I don't think he liked my beat up old cap I wore) Well, I knew how much he like his collection of caps, (as I had heard Craig and Doug Z. bragging about their collections) so I would kindly turn Craig down, but after the 3rd or 4th time of Craig showing up behind me, with a smile and a stack of caps, I finaly accepted one.
Craig's smile got even bigger, he was like a kid in a candy store!! ....( I still have the hat, thanks Craig)
WOW, I better quit rambling.
To Kathy, and Craig's family, I'm sorry for your loss......
Everytime a light comes on or the sun is shining bright, I will think of Craig's

Kathy, I was totally shocked when I heard about Craig. He and I enjoyed many lunches together, spent a lot of time in the Resource Center discussing issues and planning the next community activity. We spent a lot of time together hauling those college laptops around teaching those beginning computer workshops. He, Dick Corkle, and I certainly spent a lot of time together those years. He was always cheerful, friendly, and ready to dive into something new and different. He was a true friend to many people here in Neligh. Dewey Teel

Craig was a natural at teaching. A true natural. He had a passion for wind turbines unrivaled by anyone in the wind building. He contributed to a great new textbook, "Maintenance Fundamentals for Wind Technicians". I was proud to see his name in the acknowledgements section when I read the book. I appreciated his lessons, his instructing, his tests, his powerpoints... every aspect of his classes was well organized and well thought out. He was a big asset in the wind program. Some people are born to teach others. Craig was one of those people.

As we worked in communities across Nebraska, Craig always brought a smile and a sense of humor, and encouragement; to help everyone understand that we all needed to work together for the benefit of the region. He always had a positive attitude. It was a joy to see him grow, and to see he and Kathy meet and fall in love. We will all miss Craig, but know that he left the world a better place. Craig, what a special and lovable guy!!! There is a group of us that worked with Craig in the 90's at NECC in Norfolk, NE. Craig was a part of a close knit team that just enjoyed everyday. As I talked to many of the old group everyone had so many kind and funny memories. Craig's sense of humor had a way of being infectious. I remember when the internet was brand new and "abstract Craig" was teaching "concrete Bev" how it all worked!! It was a joy to watch as Kathy and Craig fell in love and married. We are all blessed by Craig's life and the gifts of memories he gave us! I love reading all the tributes about Craig and the impact he continued to have after he left us in Norfolk!

As you grow older you find yourself thinking back on your youth with warm remeberances. Some of my favorate times as a kid were spend with Mike Shaal and Craig. Craig was such a talented, gifted, and I dare say, genius personality. I got to spend time with him this fall, the first time I had seen him in 25 years and yet, it was like we'd just hung out in the basement of his parent's house the day before.
There was the time we learned how to use Morris code and the telegraph machines and spend days sending each others messages. We would write out the message, encode it, and send it across the basement room. Hours spent decoding and reading the latest 'news'.
The time we decided we were all the Kennedy Brothers and argued over who would be JFK, RFK, and Teddy. I think we ended up rotating who was who.
So many great times. So many great memories.
I will miss you.

The Climb of My Life
They say the first step in
Anything worthwhile is the most difficult.
Yet, the discomfort of the unfamiliar soon fades
As what was new becomes commonplace.
After all, it is our nature to explore
And reach for new heights.
As I prepare myself for the ascent,
I have a new sense of what this climb means.
I don my gear and step onto the platform.
Looking up, it seems so far - I brace myself.
I grab the rungs firmly and hand-over-hand,
Foot-by-foot, begin the climb of my life.
Invigorated by the prospect of surprise,
My legs carry me upward, building momentum.
My hands steady me as gravity strains against me.
As I look below me at the first ascent,
Amazed at how quickly those early steps passed,
I feel the childlike joy the struggle brought me.
Looking upward, I am ready for the next ascent,
More difficult than the last, the challenge excites me.
Again, I step onto the platform and brace myself.
This ascent is more demanding, testing my resolve.
Muscles burn and confidence waivers, but I press on.
I should rest, but my resolve will not allow it.
My chest heaves, my heart beat drums,
And in my ears I hear the roar of every breath.
My body wants to give up and descend to safety,
Yet my will drives me forward undeterred.
Salt stings my eyes and though I waiver,
My first goal is within reach.
As I pause on the second level I realize
The struggle of the last ascent gave me fortitude,
Belief that I can master the difficulty ahead.
Yet, looking up at the next ascent, I wonder.
The weight of the climb is heavy now.
Unwilling to yield, intrepid, I move on.
I brace myself, drawing a deep breath
As I surge upward in another struggle of will.
I am wiser from the struggle of the last ascent.
Moving more deliberately, I overcome
The exuberant impatience of youth.
Clear thinking prevails and pain lessens.
The third ascent has honed my skill,
And I have mastered my craft.
Ahead of me lies the fourth ascent,
Into the chamber where my thoughts
And a lifetime's experiences come to fruition.
I know service now and I am ready.
Unhesitatingly, I bid good-bye to all I've known,
Glad for the experiences that shaped me.
Entering the chamber, the weight of the climb
Is lifted, replaced by a new sense of wonder.
I have arrived at the final waypoint of this climb,
The sun intensely shining through the skylights.
I am acutely aware that my pain is gone
And my eyes are open to a new transition.
As I make the final step into crisp daylight,
My eyes adjust to the brightness.
Below me, green fields as far as the eye can see;
Above me, a clear, blue sky.
Before me, a new sunrise.
Craig,
Thank you so much for being a mentor to me as I learned from one of the very best. I've known few people who were always on two sides of an issue, exploring incessantly for the truth in a way that brought people together. Always a student and a teacher in the same instant, you displayed hopeful optimism, patience, perseverance and curiosity every day. Thank you for being a sterling example to follow and for contagiously spreading your positive mental attitude.

I am saddened to know we have lost a great person. I will cherish our last gathering with wonderful friends at Yesterday's last summer. We were all so loud and had such a great time while Craig went around and snapped photos of us being ridiculously silly.

Craig,
You'll certainly be missed. Not only by other ILCC staff, but by students who have benefited from your wisdom. It was rewarding for me to obtain work as a turbine technician, yet I was a year older than you. You had a role of that process in transforming me from one career to another in greater demand, and I'll miss getting to chat with you in this life. We shared the ham radio hobby and it's painful to announce a "Silent Key", and I encourage the Evert Family to notify ARRL.ORG of your passing so an announcement can be published in the near future. From other comments, you were Masonic. I never even knew this, but I kept my participation in the Craft a secret throughout Estherville during my education, spare that certain fellow students you instructed would learn of it and ridicule me for it. You certainly had the proper demeanor of someone in good standing, and it hurts even more that I can't assist with any Masonic Rites you may be rightfully granted due to my distance, yet I look forward to visiting you again on the other side, my brother.

What a shock to hear of Craig's death! He and I had many good talks when he was in Nebraska. A beer and a cheap cigar were often the centerpieces of a philosophical discussion. I'll miss a good man and a good Mason. Kathy, Cindy, Les - my sincere condolences.

I remember meeting you as my neighbor's (Cindy's) little brother, and her telling me you thought I was a god, because of my supremely messy house. The upside down couch in the hallway was pretty impressive, I suppose. Later, long after I lost track of Cindy, we swapped emails for some time, which I always enjoyed very much, but you moved, or I moved, and an email address was lost along the way. I will always remember your humor and ability to look at the light side of anything. While I haven't laid eyes on you for years, knowing you are no longer in this world saddens me. On to the next plane, I guess, and I hope we meet up there, someday. Namaste, wherever you might be, Craig.

I remember your smile, your easy demeanor, and your encouragement. I remember the time we drove up to the golf course and were talking about "sneaking on" because nobody was in the club house, and then found out it was free for the day and laughed all the way back to town. Our world is a little colder now that your warm heart is not with us. We miss you. Rick and Grace and Chloe Lightle

Here is to the roommate that introduced me to the love of my life, I am forever thankful Craig. There are so many memories, DED softball, the Hilton, spud canons, Craig bringing movies home that he would record when 10-11 would sign off for the night---you are in a better place now Craig, I will miss you.
