Obituary of Alice Sangl
Alice Mae (Hargrave) Sangl, 83, of Lakefield. MN, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 15, 2020 at Colonial Manor Nursing Home in Lakefield, MN, after just a few months stay. Alice was born on Monday, August 23, 1937 in rural Dickens, Iowa to Ivan Laval and Emma Melissa (Gadsby) Hargrave. She will be placed to rest at the Dickens Cemetery at a later date, following a private family gathering.
Her first year of school was at a one-room country school house, just one mile from their home. Then the family moved to rural Webster City, Iowa, where Alice graduated in 1956 from Lincoln High School. She then attended Gale Institute in Minneapolis, MN, where she received her Certificate of Railroad and Airline Ticketing in 1957. Alice worked for Nabisco until 1958, when she transferred to the Des Moines, Iowa facility, working until 1961.
Alice married Jerry Bill Hart on May 21, 1960, in Des Moines. Later they moved to rural Polk City, IA, before purchasing a farm near Granger, IA in 1969. They amassed quite a collection of antiques by attending many auctions over the years. Alice kept up with quite a large garden each summer, canning and freezing food for the family, along with helping to sort and load hogs on the farm. In the evenings she would sew many of the clothes for their children, and found time to crochet a few blankets, and make crafty items. When all three children were in school, Alice worked at Sears in Des Moines for a while, and the Production Credit Association in Perry for 11 years. In 1986, Alice moved to Sioux City, IA and worked for Ballou Brick in Sergeant Bluff.
On May 27, 1991 Alice married Orville R Sangl, Sr and moved to rural Spirit Lake in Minnesota. She worked several years for the Livewire Printing Co in Jackson, MN. Then held several part-time positions for various businesses in the area, as well as working with Orville at his boat repair business. From secretarial to bookkeeping to re-upholstering, and helping with engine repairs, there wasn't much she could not handle.
Alice was active in her church and with the Lake Promenaders Square Dance Club. Throughout her adult life she loved to sew, garden, bake, paint, square dance, camp and ride on the Harley with Orville. She had an uncanny ability to be walking across the yard, suddenly stop and say: Look, there's a 4 leaf clover. Her real joy came when being surrounded by her husband, children, grandchildren, and then great grandchildren. She loved to watch the little ones grow and learn.
Alice was preceded in death by her parents, Emma and Ivan Hargrave; 2 sisters and their husbands: Patricia and Wendell Nicholson, Emily Jean and John Abbas; a brother, George Russell Hargrave; a brother-in-law, Merrill Blackburn; a niece, Elizabeth Dick; and a step son, Brian Sangl.
She is survived by her husband, Orville R Sangl, Sr; a daughter, Cynthia (Bruce) Godbersen; 2 sons, Damon Hart, Eric (Shelley) Hart; 5 grandsons, Scott (Desiree) Godbersen, Todd (Anastasia) Godbersen, Russell (Sara) Godbersen, Jarod Hart and Luccas Hart; 4 great grandchildren, Kaylin Owens, Kaleb Godbersen, Teddy Godbersen and Quinn Godbersen. She is also survived by 1 step son, Orville Sangl, Jr; 2 step daughters, Kris (Mark) Hoss and Julie (Gene) Lamack and 7 step grand children and many step great grandchildren. Alice is also survived by 1 sister, Betty Blackburn; 1 brother and his wife, Ron (Martha) Hargrave; and 1 sister-in-law, Judy Hargrave; along with 9 nieces and 2 nephews and their families.
