50 years have passed since I was in your class and still I can remember snapshots like yesterday. There is nothing quite like an excellent teacher - and you were that Señor. You leave such an incredible legacy in the lives of those of us, your students in whom you planted the seeds of learning to love another culture and language. Friends used to say I was like another person when I spoke Spanish. I have no doubt but that those seeds of confidence and encouragement through those early Pan Am days in the 70's found their ground in my 30+ years of missions service. Tu eres único Señor! You are missed here but heaven welcomes you... Diane (Koppen) Rickard ( photo: Pan Am Club 1973)

Senor was my favorite teacher of all time. His class was the only one in high school that I really wanted to do well in. His passion was contagious. Not only was he a great teacher but an outstanding human being and friend. Who would take 20 teenagers on a 3 week bus trip through Mexico!! There was a spot waiting for him in heaven. RIP.

It’s impossible to think of high school without thinking of Senor. From singing songs in Spanish class to Mexico trips, Pan Am program to taco towne. He was not only a great teacher but a friend to all. So grateful the Baker family got to share in his life.

I was saddened to learn that Señor had passed away. While taking Spanish in S.L. I knew that Señor was an excellent teacher, but as I got older I began to realize just how good he really was. He completely committed his life to teaching and the students he taught. After retirement, his work in Oaxaca exemplified his commitment to teaching and helping many children that otherwise had no hope or future. Señor set the bar at a level that few will ever achieve, made the world a better place, and will be missed by so many. My deepest sympathies to his family.

I was fortunate to meet Cliff when I worked as a Para at the high school. He was so fun to be around and the stories he would tell. His laugh was contagious. Cliff taught all three of my children. He was also brave enough to take our extended family to Mexico during Christmas break. I will miss his visits, his laughter and his friendship.

Dear Gary and Janet and Douglas and Mavis and all of the Hindermans, I am so sorry to hear about the death of Cliff. He was a true gentleman and one of the finest human beings on earth. I joined Cliff and his students for three weeks of great fun and learning all about Mexico as well as about the fine art of shopping, and it changed my life in many ways. I must confess to being one of the goat wranglers who presented him with the finest goat in Northwest Iowa. He did not agree and gave the old girl a big push into the back seat of the farmer’s car, hoping never to see her again. He was gracious even then to us tricksters. Treasure all the wonderful stories about him. Vaya con dios, Cliff. Jean Novotny, Phoenix, AZ

I first met Cliff in Oaxaca about six years ago. I was happy to meet a fellow Iowan. A Oaxaca Street Kids volunteer introduced us. Jimmie, the volunteer, invited me to join them nightly at a cafe in the Zocolo where Cliff would share his deep knowledge about the lives of Oaxacan kids he had come to know and love. I remember him pointing out a former participant in the program who had earned his licensure in dentistry. He talked about the poor children bused down from the mountains to sell candy in the Zocolo. I shall miss his presence, knowledge and influence in Oaxaca.

Señor Hinderman was an amazing example of teaching and caring plus positive actions. His examples and works will live on, as will his passion for outreach. I did not have him directly as a Spanish teacher but he always remembered me. My sympathy to his family and our community. May we live by his example.

I was on Senor's first trip to Mexico in 1968. My son, Nathan, was on the last school trip with Senor. Cliff had a positive impact on many SL students but his commitment to the Oaxaca children was remarkable. A proud moment for us was when our sponsored child Reyna graduated as a nurse since first sponsoring her when she was a child. That is just one story of his legacy. Muchas Gracies Senor Cliff!

Cliff was an influencer before that was a thing. Countless students were positively impacted by this fine educator and friend. I studied in Mexico and majored in Spanish in college thanks to the great cultural foundation I gained from Senor. He will be dearly missed. ~ Judi Clauson Vogel

Señor was my mentor during high school and my friend for many years after as I began and developed my Spanish teaching career. Kris Hamilton and I talked him into taking us (and 8 juniors) to Mexico in 1968. The rest is history for so many who went with him for decades. (Minus the LONG bus ride from SL I understand in later years which enhanced the experience I am sure)
I saw him occasionally over the years first with my daughter- who beat him at Hangman- and then with my grandson. Almost always with Ann Chozen who loved him like so many in town and in Mexico. I will cherish our last phone conversation after his 80th birthday.
My condolences to his family, many friends here and in Mexico. Ve con Dios, Señor.

I met Cliff in Oaxaca 8 years ago and saw him several times a year when I volunteered at Oaxaca Street Children. We lived in the same apartment building there. Cliff was such a kind and generous man. Everyone knows him on the Zocalo and stopped to chat with Señor Cliff. He will be sorely missed. I enjoyed his sense of humor and his friendly demeanor. Oaxaca won't be the same without him. Vaya con Dios, Cliff

So many great memories of Senor, as a student in his classroom all 4 years of high school. Eating tacos and enchiladas for the first time at Taco Town. Participating in Pan Am Shows. Traveling to Mexico with other students, by Greyhound bus 50 years ago this month. He was an amazing person that had a positive influence on so many lives. Vaya con Dios, Senor.

The Spirit Lake Schools have excellent teachers, and each teacher lends their own style of teaching to their craft. Senor had his own style and flair to all that he did in and out of the classroom. He did not just talk the talk-- he would walk the walk. And he did not do anything on a small scale, it was always a big event and including as many students, teachers and community members as he could (organizing trips to Mexico, Taco Town and Pan Am Club) . He was a true humanitarian by sharing his love and knowledge of the Spanish language and the Mexican culture to all he knew. When I was a senior in his Spanish 4 class I was undecided about what to do after high school. He told me, "You will never be disappointed for learning a language. It is something you will always have and you can do a lot with it." I student taught in his classroom for 2 weeks when I was in college. I took his advice and I am celebrating 30 years of teaching high school Spanish. Muchisimas gracias, Senor!
He was a client of my dad's at the barber shop, a good friend to my grandma who worked at the music store and he would catch up on news with my mom at Hy-Vee. I would get updates from my folks about Senor and when he was coming or going to Mexico. He would send me bulletins of his schools and his students in Oaxaca, MX-- with whom he was really proud of all that they had accomplished academically, as well as socially to bolster the lives of so many who without his help would have a much more difficult life. He will be missed but not forgotten. I know I am a better person for having him in my life. Viva, Sr. Hinderman!!
