My sincerest sympathy to you on the loss of your father and grandfather. I knew Darrell and Shirley in the 90’s when I attended the Presbyterian Church in Spirit Lake, and was in a birthday club with Shirley. There were the kindest, and most sincere people. We shared the fact that my siblings names all started with S, as did their children. What a blessing to have had them as your parents and grandparents. Sharon Holven

Uncle Darrell and I made some trips to the Howard SD area over the last few years to check out family homesteads from long ago. We were fortunate to find people who were knowledgeable in the history of the county and were able to point out various sites to us. We located the original homestead of Darrell's grandparents (my great grandparents) where only a portion of the foundation was remaining. Darrell was visibly moved and stood at the site for a long time. We visited the beautiful Belleview Lutheran Church with adjoining cemetery where several of our relatives are interred. I so enjoyed making these trips with Darrell and we had some good visits then and throughout the years. I know that Darrell was very much at peace given his strong faith the days preceding his passing and was ready to leave us. He will be missed. Diane McComber, niece

I My sympathy to Darrell’s family. I got to know Darrell when I lived in Okoboji and visited the Y daily. Darrell was always there and very friendly and outgoing. He was a nice man.
