Obituary of Gary Lind

A memorial service for Gary Lind, age 77, of Spirit Lake will be held on Friday, October 29, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. at the Turner Jenness Funeral Home in Spirit Lake. Visitation will take place prior to the service from 10:00-11:00 a.m. at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the family of Gary Lind. 

Gary Gene Lind, the son of Alden and Dorothy Lind, was born on August 30, 1944, in Estherville, Iowa. Growing up, Gary attended school in Estherville and later served in the Army National Guard.

On January 21, 1968, Gary was united in marriage to Karla Kay Watrous in Milford.

Gary was a longtime employee at Berkley’s and for many years performed in several bands including DJ and the Runaways. Gary was a 1997 inductee into the Iowa Rock ‘n Roll Music Association Hall of Fame. In his retirement, Gary worked at Emerald Hills Golf Course. 

Throughout his life, Gary lived in Estherville, Milford and Mesa, Arizona before moving to Spirit Lake in August of 2020. In his free time, Gary loved music, golfing, and spending time with his family and friends.

Gary passed away October 21, 2021 at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota at seventy-seven years of age.

Those left to cherish his memory include his two sons, Stacy Lind and Brian Lind; two grandchildren, Jacob Lind and Karlee Lind; siblings, Barb Mingledorff, Merlyn (Betty) Lind, and Carmen (Gale) Heidecker; significant other, Jolene Schmidtke; brother-in-law, Mick (Julie) Noteboom; several nieces and nephews.

Gary was preceded in death by his parents, Alden and Dorothy (Barlow) Lind; wife, Karla Kay Lind; sister-in-law, Evon Loontjer; brother-in-law, Huey Mingledorff; and great-niece, Samantha Jo Novak.
