John, I am sad to see you are experiencing a new season in your life - the loss of your wife and soul mate. I've met Sue only a handful of times over the years when working with you at the utility. As I look back on those occasions, I do recall that she was a great lady..... you both being persons of integrity. Know that Linda and I are praying for you and your family. And, John, thank you for being a friend over the years.

Sue was an amazing advisor, and an even better person. She was a driving force in recruiting me, and I enjoyed working alongside her in the introductory courses for Freshmen. I'd often stop by her office to chat, discuss life, and listen to stories about her younger years when she grew up with my uncle. It was a privilege to know her, and I will remember her in all the years to come.

John and family,
I have many fond memories of Sue. While Sue was an advisor of students in the ag and bio engineering department at Iowa State, I was a faculty member and chair of the department’s engineering curriculum committee. As a student advisor, she was a member of this committee. This was a very busy committee so we met every week on Friday morning at 8. We had coffee and cookies, cake, donuts or other treats brought by members. We were all good friends so we shared our highs and lows and laughed a lot. Sometimes we would do that when faced with a problem we could not solve. As chair, I really needed someone to keep everything organized. I needed a right-hand person and that was Sue. She made sure I signed and sent the right forms at the right time to the right places. In this time when computer forms were just getting started, most things were on paper. This was a committee meeting I always looked forward to attending.
Sue introduced my wife Nancy and me to the Manhattan Short Film Festival, an annual screening of 10 short films from all over the world during the same week in the fall. If you remember, Nancy and I went with Sue and you several times to the Des Moines art center screenings and we have gone several times since you moved to Spirit Lake. Since you and I both worked with electric power, we had lively conversations in the front seat while Sue and Nancy talked about women things in the back seat. You invited us to come to Spirit Lake and attend a screening there, but I regret we never got that done.
John, Nancy and I really enjoyed our friendship with Sue and you and we are very sorry for your loss.

My deepest sympathy to you John, Amy and Betsy and your families. Sue gave much to others through her teaching and volunteering. Her family was her treasure. I enjoyed many activities with Sue and we shared our thoughts on teaching. family and life. I loved walking Indian Hills Golf Course where I admired how she hit the ball long and straight. Sue cared for others and gave of herself in word and deed. I will miss my good friend.

I am so sorry, Betsy, John, and Amy. I always enjoyed Sue so much...her intelligence and the happiness that radiated from her. I know that this is a tragic loss for you to lose your beautiful mother and wife so unexpectedly. May it help to know how much she meant to everyone and will be long remembered by everyone who had the joy of knowing her. You have always been a very special and loving family and my deepest sympathy to you at this sad time.
