Obituary of Betty Newman
A funeral service will be held for Betty Newman, age 84, of Milford, on Wednesday, September 17, 2014 at 10:30am at the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Milford. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be on Tuesday, September 16th after 3:00pm with the family present from 5:00-7:30pm at Turner Jenness Funeral Home in Milford. There will be a Parish Scripture service at 7:30pm at the funeral home.
Betty Ruth Newman was born June 21, 1930 to Perry and Thresa (Walsh) Hansen in Estherville, Iowa. She grew up on a farm near Terril and received her education at the Terril Community School, graduating in 1948.
Betty was united in marriage to Arlo Wayne Newman on December 27, 1949 and to this union four children were born - Duane, Roger, Donna and Kay. She first worked at the Terril Cooperative Elevator and then for many years at Younkers in Spencer. After the store closed, she worked for Shoppers Supply in Spirit Lake, which then became Bomgaars, in the National brand hardware department where she was known as "Miss National".
Betty enjoyed gardening, flowers, roller skating, and traveling. She took many trips seeing various parts of the United States along with Nova Scotia, Ireland and Central Europe. She was also a bus escort for Southwest Tours of Jackson, Minnesota helping other people enjoy bus traveling. She never wanted to miss "The Price is Right" and traveled with a friend to attend the show in California to see Bob Barker. Other favorites were Godfather's Pizza, where she always had her own special "Betty's Pizza" and Dairy Queen blizzards. Betty was a 4-H leader for several years and enjoyed attending her grandchildren's activities. She was a member of St. Joseph Church in Milford.
Betty lived east of Milford, then moved into the town of Milford and for the past five years, resided at Welcov Assisted Living in Spirit Lake. She passed away on September 13, 2014 at the Lakes Regional Healthcare in Spirit Lake, Iowa at eighty-four years of age.
She is survived by her children: Duane (Connie) Newman of Milford; Roger (Cheryl) Newman of Council Bluffs; Donna (VerDon) Schmidt of Everly and Kay (Todd) Suhr of Grimes, IA. Her grandchildren are Travis Suhr of Grimes; Nicole Suhr of Seattle, WA; Crystal Ramsey of Mesa, AZ and Darci (Jared) Domerese of Mountain Home, AR and four great-grandchildren - Michael, Seharra, Lucas and Rylee. She is also survived by her sisters, Mary Ann Beck of Story City, IA and Ilene Drown of Emmetsburg, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; grandson, Michael Newman and grandson-in-law, Russell Ramsey.
