Obituary of Robert Herbert
Mr. Robert Herbert, 88, of Lake Park, Iowa, passed away Tuesday, January 13, 2015, at his home in Lake Park. Visitation will be Friday, January 16, 2015, at 5 pm at with the family present from 5-7 pm at the United Methodist Church in Lake Park. Services will be 2 pm Saturday, January 17, 2015, at the United Methodist Church in Lake Park.
Robert (Bob) Miles Herbert was born July 3, 1926, in Marne, Iowa to Bob and Hazel (Miles) Herbert. In 1929 the family moved to a farm west of Lake Park. Bob and his dad farmed the land together until his dad's retirement.
Bob attended and graduated from Lake Park High School in 1943. On June 11, 1950, he married Sally Irvine. They had three children, Jared, who still farms the original farm, Pam, and Jan. Bob and his family were active members of the Lake Park United Methodist Church.
Bob and Sally did volunteer work for Heifer Project between 1977 and 1984. They spent time working at the HPI Ranch in Arkansas, helping to send animals to countries around the world and the United States. Bob and Sally also went to Cameroon for HPI with their swine program.
In 1987-88 Bob and Sally spent twelve months in Congo (Zaire) as Volunteers in Mission under the General Board of Global Ministries. While there Bob assisted in building a school. In addition, the Herberts volunteered many times for projects in Latvia, Bulgaria, Russia, Texas, New Mexico, Louisiana and Kentucky.
Bob loved to travel, and took his family on numerous camping trips, often to the Rocky Mountains. Later on Bob and Sally traveled to most of the states as well as internationally to many countries.
Bob is survived by his wife, Sally, of 64 years. He is also remembered by son Jared and his wife Mary of Lake Park, and daughters Pam and her husband Bob Hansen of East Bethel, MN and Jan and her husband Dennis Carter of San Francisco, CA. Bob leaves his beloved grandchildren Brita and Ben Burke of Charlotte, NC, Dan Hansen and Lauren Oscilowski of Whitefish, MT, Nora and Shane Matthys of Sioux Falls, SD, Spencer Herbert of Northfield, MN, Serra and Nathan King of Lake Stevens, WA, and Scott and Katie Carter of Mountain View, CA. He will be missed by his great-grandchildren Aurora King, and Ian and Jack Burke. Bob is also survived by his sister Donna Greenwood of Des Moines.
