Obituary of Verland Sorensen

Verland Fred Sorensen, 84, passed away June 7th 2015. He was born July 31, 1930 in Spirit Lake, Iowa, to Fred Sorensen and Frances (George) Sorensen. He graduated from Spirit Lake High School in 1947 and served as a Corporal in the United States Army from 1948 to 1951. Verland married Marilyn Sue (Lowry) Sorensen on June 5, 1958. He worked many years for Coca Cola and McQuay Industries. After retiring, he managed the VFW and drove bus for the Spirit Lake Community School. He was a member of the United Methodist Church, Masons, VFW and served as the Spirit Lake Little League President for several years. Verland enjoyed golfing, hunting, fishing, woodworking and playing cards. In his later years, he and Marilyn enjoyed their winter months in Weslaco, Texas. Verland is survived by his wife, Marilyn; children Jeffrey (Leslie) Sorensen of Spirit Lake, Michael Sorensen of Sioux Falls, SD, Eric (Anita) Sorensen of Spirit Lake, and Elizabeth (Bryan) Gilmore of Laurel Hill, FL; grandchildren Nathan Kilgore, Amanda Sorensen, Lance Sorensen, Kristin Sorensen, John Sorensen, Katelyn Sorensen, Heather Sorensen, Logan Sorensen, and Bethany Sorensen; Sister Carole (Richard) Rasmussen of Omaha, NE; Brothers George (Patricia) Sorensen of Odem, TX and Larry (Arlene) Sorensen of Sioux Falls, SD. Verland was preceded in death by his parents; sisters Betty Lou (Sorensen) Thompson, Avis Marie (Sorensen) Hoffman, and Rhonda Jayne Sorensen, and brother Donald Eugene Sorensen. Verland had requested no service or memorial be held and his family will bury him at Memorial Gardens Cemetery at a later date.
