Obituary of Wylma Romine

A funeral service for Wylma Romine, age 92, of Spirit Lake, will be held Thursday, October 1, 2015 at 10:30am at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Spirit Lake. Burial will be at Lakeview Gardens Cemetery. Visitation will be on Wednesday, September 30th after 4:00pm with the family present from 5:00-7:00pm at Turner Jenness Funeral Home in Spirit Lake. Wylma Jean Hill Romine was born August 27, 1923 to James and Alma (Balmer) Hill at Maple Hill, Iowa. She was baptized on September 7, 1924 in Gruver, Iowa. At the age of 14, she joined the Presbyterian Church in Maple Hill. She attended country school for eight years and then Maple Hill High School, graduating in 1940. After high school, she attended Estherville Jr. College and Buena Vista College, graduating in 1943. Wylma taught elementary school in Cylinder, Iowa and Armstrong, Iowa. On April 16, 1944, Wylma was married to Ordell Romine at her parent's home in rural Estherville. She was then confirmed at St. John's in Storm Lake on June 15, 1947. Wylma and Ordell were blessed with two daughters, Suzanne Kay and Sandra Jane. Wylma loved working with children and taught Sunday school for many years. She was a member of the Ladies Aid Sewing and served as an officer several times. After returning to Spirit Lake in 1986, Wylma volunteered at centers for abuse and sexual assault as well as Lakes Regional Healthcare. Wylma passed away September 27, 2015 at Lakes Regional Healthcare in Spirit Lake at ninety-two years of age. Left to mourn is her daughter, Sandra and her husband, John Nelson; four grandsons, Stacey Akin, Shane (Erin) Akin, Heath Halverson (Melanie Fleming) and Hunter (Angie) Halverson; six great-grandchildren, Amber, Riley, Bryce, Alex, Ganon and Griffin; two great-great-grandsons, Ajay and Anthony; sister, Florence Howell; brother, James (Denna) Hill; sister-in-law, Marcia Hill; brother-in-law, Albert Hawkins; several nieces and nephews. Wylma was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Ordell; daughter, Suzanne; brothers, Robert, Russell and Donald; sister, Rhoda Bell.
