Obituary of Roger Swenson

A funeral service for Roger Swenson, age 89, of Milford, will be held Saturday, February 13, 2016 at 1:30pm at First Lutheran Church in West Okoboji. Burial will be at Milford Cemetery. Visitation will be on Friday, February 12th from 6:00-8:00pm at Turner Jenness Funeral Home in Milford. Roger Carl Swenson was born October 31, 1926, in Milford, Iowa to Carl and Verda (Hunter) Swenson. He attended country schools and Milford Public before graduating from Arnolds Park. After graduation, Roger enlisted in the Navy where he was stationed in California. Roger married Ruth Eckard on March 30, 1946 while in California. They had met as school friends while growing up in Iowa. After Roger was discharged from the Navy they returned to Iowa to farm northwest of Milford. Roger and Ruth had two sons Gary and Steve. The family moved southeast of Milford where Roger later retired. After Ruth passed away in 1976, Roger married Dody Jones who later passed away in 2000. Roger spent the winters in Arizona enjoying golf, one of the highlights was when he got a hole in one. During the summers, he enjoyed fishing and golfing in Iowa. His favorite fishing was in Wisconsin with his friends. He also enjoyed his time with grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Roger passed away on February 9, 2016 at the age of eighty-nine at the Hawkeye Care Center in Milford. He was preceded in death by his parents; two wives, Ruth and Dody; his brother, Marvin and several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law. He is survived by his two sons, Gary (Kay) Swenson of Milford and Steve (Sue) Swenson of Spencer; grandchildren, Scott (Chelsea) Swenson, Shane Swenson, Becky (Travis) Kennedy and Jackie Swenson; great-grandchildren, Joe and Sophie Kennedy, Brianna and Caden Swenson; sister, Jeane Tatman and sister-in-law, Alice Eckard.
