Obituary of Althea C. Meyer

Funeral services for Althea Meyer, 83, of Spirit Lake and formerly of Harris, Iowa, will be held at 1:30 pm, Monday, February 20, 2017, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Spirit Lake. Interment will be at Union Cemetery in Harris. Visitation will begin at 4 pm, Sunday, February 19, 2017, with the family present from 4 - 6 pm at Turner Jenness Funeral Home in Spirit Lake. Althea Carolyn Meyer, the daughter of Evelyn (Oelke) and Carl Strom, was born February 13, 1934 in Belmont Township, Jackson County, Minnesota. Althea was baptized on March 17, 1934 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Lakefield, Minnesota and was later confirmed on May 22, 1949. She started her education in a rural school and at the age of seven, she moved with her family to a farm near Lakefield and entered the Lakefield School system, graduating with the class of 1952. Althea continued her education at Mankato State College. Following graduation she taught school one year before marrying Donald Meyer on July 2, 1955. While farming near Harris, Iowa, Althea taught many years in the Ocheyedan School system followed by one year at Zion Lutheran Day School in rural Ocheyedan. Soon after her marriage, she transferred her church membership to St. John Lutheran Church in Harris. She taught Sunday School for many years, assisted with mid week classes and served in various offices, committees and ladies circles. In 1995, she and Don transferred their church membership to Immanuel Lutheran in Spirit Lake and remained there until the end of their lives. Althea was a lifelong member of the LCMS. In 2007, Althea moved to Spirit Lake where she made her home at Homestead for the last several years. Althea passed away February 16, 2017 at a care facility in Luverne, Minnesota at eighty-three years of age. She is survived by her two sons, Richard and Kathy Meyer of Mobridge, South Dakota and David and Sheila Meyer of Luverne, Minnesota; four daughters, Marian and Randy Flitter of Groton, South Dakota, Jean Meyer of Mankato, Minnesota, Betty Meyer of Eagle Lake, Minnesota and Shirley and Joe Freed of Traer, Iowa; thirteen grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; one sister, Ethlyn and her husband, Loren Cuperus of Lakefield, Minnesota. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, in 2006; one sister, Carolee and her husband, Clinton Baumgard.
