Obituary of Georgia Sheley
Georgia Therese Sheley entered her Earthly Home November 15, 1934 and at age 82 entered her Heavenly Home Friday, May 26, 2017. She was the first of six children born to Matt and Mildred (Luchtel) Richter. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 am Thursday, June 1 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Milford. Visitation will begin at 4 pm Wednesday, May 31 with the family present 4-7 pm at St. Joseph Catholic Church.
Having lived her entire life in Milford, IA, she attended St. Joseph Catholic School until the tenth grade and graduated from Milford High School. Her youth was filled with hunting and playing softball.
Georgia married Roy Sheley on September 22, 1968 and had two children, Joy and Dean. She was an Office Assistant for Dr. Buchanan dispensing band aids, smiles and comforting words. Georgia wrote a weekly column in the Milford Mail entitled "Welcome Friends." Later, she joined the staff of The Three Sons and was referred to as "Upper Level Management" by helping customers on the second floor.
Her faith and friendship defined her life as she was an active member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Catholic Daughters, Peace and Justice Committee, Opus Spiritus Sancti, and The Final Four. As chair of the University of Okoboji Winter Games Prayer Committee, it was her responsibility to see that we had snow and ice. She also proudly served as a member of the Iowa Navy Commodores as an ambassador for the Iowa Great Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce. Doing her civic duty, she served over 25 years on the Board of Adjustment for the city of Milford. Georgia was also an enthusiastic supporter of Marsh Marigolds and the ultimate cheerleader for all the organizations she belonged to. By all those whose lives she touched, she will be remembered by her caring kindness, phone calls to friends, and spunk.
Georgia also loved Angel pins, popcorn, scotcheroos, and anything chocolate but most all sports. Being an athlete in her youth, she was recruited to play on a professional women's softball team. Her love of sports was evident by her unwavering support of the Okoboji Pioneers. She also enjoyed biking on the Dickinson County Trails and most of all treasured time with grandchildren, Riya and Gabe.
Left to treasure Georgia's memory, are her daughter Joy Sheley of Milford, IA and Joy's Hero, Larry Post, son Dean (Sally) Sheley of Brandon, SD and grandchildren Riya and Gabe Sheley. She is also survived by siblings, Marie Senter of San Antonio TX, Emil (Sue) Richter of Milford IA, Herman (Paula) Richter of Milford IA, Corinne Hummel of Panora IA, and several nieces and nephews to include Brian (Ashley) Richter of Milford IA, Jenna (Will) and Mason Dible of Arnolds Park IA, Matt Richter of Arnolds Park IA, Mia Richter of Iowa City IA, Mark Richter of Milford IA, Linda (Vern) and Vaya Pilling of Tucson AZ, Jim (Kelly) and Ruby Hummel of Yale IA, and Bill, Madison and Evelyn Hummel of Panora IA.
Georgia was preceded in death by husband, Roy Sheley, parents, Matt and Mildred Richter, and brother, Jim Richter. In lieu of flowers, kindly send memorials to the charity of your choice. Turner Jenness Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Georgia had an affinity for Angels by wearing an Angel pin everyday and signed all cards and correspondence the same… a fitting end to a life well lived.
