A funeral service for Doyne Hummel, age 93, of Spirit Lake, will be held Friday, January 12, 2018 at 10:30 AM at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Spirit Lake. Burial will be at Memory Gardens Cemetery. Visitation will be on Thursday, January 11th from 5:30-7:30 PM at Turner Jenness Funeral Home in Spirit Lake. Doyne Ormajean (Wilson) Hummel was born August 26, 1924, the first child of Zeke and Mabel Wilson, in Arnolds Park, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith and was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Spirit Lake. She graduated from Arnolds Park High School. Doyne met Johnny Hummel, and after many a dance they were married on March 17, 1946. They continued to love dancing, playing cards and spending time with their family and friends. The couple had two daughters, Candy (1951) and Shelley (1954). Doyne was at her best as a mother. She always supported and loved her girls and their families unconditionally. She spent many hours watching their activities during their school years, as well as following their grandchildren's activities whenever she was able to. Doyne was the best grandma ever to Jessica and Sean Zweifel; Mack and Sarah Iwen; Katie and Tommy Grabowski; Sarah Dosmann and Ben Turski; Ben Dosmann and Morgan Lange; Payton and Abigail Zweifel; Kristopher Langrehr and Leo Grabowski. Doyne lived her life to the fullest and knew how to have fun. She was always nurturing and caring for friends as well as family. She had many, many good friends during her years. She cared for them and they cared for her. She stayed close to the friends she made while waitressing at Village East. She had neighborhood friends that she enjoyed coffee with. Doyne's church friends were important to her; Sunday school teachers, circle friends, quilting friends and later in life her "Sunday Breakfast Club". Her friends at Wel Cov she enjoyed bridge, bingo and coffee with. Special friends who really supported her and loved her were Shirley Nattress, Kathleen Johnson, Mel Wernimont and Stephanie and Rick Waddell. She was a living example of "Friends become your family". Doyne's family appreciates their love. Doyne passed away peacefully on January 8, 2018 at Lakes Regional Healthcare with family at her side. She died a happy woman with all her wishes; still living in her home, had recently passed and renewed her drivers license and had just come back from a trip to El Paso for Christmas. Doyne was preceded in death by her husband, Johnny of sixty-two years, her parents, her sister, Dorothy Ewen, her special granddaughter, Lydia, two sisters-in-law, Betty Banning and Elayne Hummel and two brothers-in-law, George Banning and Dick Ayers. Left to cherish her memory are daughters, Candy and Shelley; sons-in-law, Charlie Mayer and Phil Dosmann; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Also surviving are a brother, Ed Wilson, sister-in-law, Mary Lou Ayres, brother-in-law, Dean Hummel; many wonderful nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives and dear friends.
