Delma Jeanne Hanby, the daughter of Albert and Delma (Ulrich) Heick, was born November 18, 1927 in Los Angeles, California. Jeanne lived on a small farm near Spencer where she attended country school. After the family moved to Spirit Lake, she graduated from Spirit Lake High School.
On August 7, 1946, Jeanne married her childhood sweetheart, Henry Hanby, even though the neighbors at the time said it would never last. Henry and Jeanne were married seventy-two years.
Jeanne was a member of the DAR, Eastern Star, Royal Neighbors, Rebeccas and Grace Lutheran Church. She loved to play bridge and played several times a month. Playing golf and boating were favorite summer activities. Jeanne and Henry traveled at every opportunity and enjoyed new adventures in Europe and every state in the union. She was an active defender of the lakes, at one point, writing an ordinance to protect the lake shores when she served on the Board of Adjustment for Dickinson County. Her grandchildren, nieces and nephews spent many lazy summer days with her at the lake. She cherished her family and the time she spent with them.
Jeanne passed away December 16, 2018 at her home in Spirit Lake at ninety-one years of age.
She is survived by her husband, Henry Hanby of Spirit Lake; her children, Diana (John) Sanders and William (Cindy) Hanby; daughter-in-law, Nancy Hanby; grandchildren, Moya Sanders, Aaron (Heather Carr) Sanders, Miranda Hanby, Dawn Geisinger and Holly Hanby; great-grandchildren, Morgan (Will Robinson) Geisinger, Paisley Williams, Taye Hanby and Elle Geisinger; great-great-grandson, Asher Robinson. Also left to cherish her memory are sisters, Patty Carter and Judith Moon; brothers, Charles Heick and James Heick; aunt, Winifred Scrom and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and one son, David Hanby.
