Obituary of Jon C. Peters

Memorial donations may be given to: Lakes Area Youth Trap Club 1692 270th Spirit Lake, Iowa 51360 Jon Clifford Peters was born on March 1, 1955, in Carroll, Iowa to Clifford and Edna Peters. His childhood years were spent in Carroll and he graduated from Carroll Public School in 1973. In high school he sang in choir and swing choir, played trombone in band and swing band. He was on the golf team. He worked during his high school years at Peters Motors in Carroll and competed in road rallies. He loved riding dirt bikes in the local gravel pit. During high school, Jon followed a course of ROTC and furthered pursued that program at the University of Iowa after graduation. While at the University, he was in the marching band and planned to pursue a pilot commission in the Air Force. Because of the reduction in available flight training commissions at the end of the Vietnam War, Jon left the program after 2 years and worked briefly before joining the Army 1976. During his service to his country, Jon was stationed in Germany, Korea three tours, Virginia, Washington, and discharged from Ft. Hood, Texas in 2004 after 25 years active duty and 3 years ROTC. He received four merit awards for Exceptional Military Service and Achievement obtaining the rank of Aircraft Maintenance Senior Sergeant (TOPS). He was assigned to Aero Scouts and Cobra helicopters and participated in the rescue missions on Mt. St. Helens. During his military career, Jon was a member of the Army Skeet Team, NSSA, and selected for the All-America Skeet Team in '93, '94,'95 and '98. Jon's skeet shooting career included yearly selection for the Armed Forces Skeet Championships and 1993 and 2009 NSSA World Skeet Championships where he shot 100's at both. Also received NSSA 7500 pin and ATA 27 yds. He acquired many trophies and medals in his shooting career including several from Sports Korea competition. Jon loved skeet shooting and continued to compete during his retirement. To share his love of the sport, he coached the Lakes Area Youth Trap Club. Jon chose the Lakes Area of NW Iowa for his retirement because of his love of the area having many fond memories of being in the area for summers during his youth for family vacations. He enjoyed boating and fishing as well as the wildlife of the area. He became an avid bicyclist and daily rode the Lakes Bike Trails. His love of animals led to his collection of pets during life including a ferret and a parrot. His loyal and faithful companion Weimaraners, Bonnie & Solo, shared rides with him in the area in his red Mini Cooper convertible. The "girls" were a favorite hit at the local Dairy Queen. Jon was a loyal and faithful friend. Those left behind will remember his playful nature, competitiveness, contrite humor and genuine caring for his friends, neighbors and acquaintances. Jon was married to Carolynn Shideler in the Little Brown Church, Nashua, Iowa, on a beautiful autumn day. He is survived by his wife, Carolynn; two step sons, Nathan of Portland, Oregon, and Neal of Kyoto, Japan; three sisters: Deanna Peters, husband Ed Ramsey, of Hillsboro, Oregon, Barb Boyd of Shell Rock, Iowa, and Mary Peters-Spears of Key West, Florida; beloved cousins: Richard, Robert and Connie; and his favored great-aunt Lelah Peters of Carroll. Jon was preceded in death by his parents Clifford and Edna Peters and a sister Errollynne Peters. Jon lost his courageous sixteen month fight against cancer April 12, 2013. From those who loved him, "he is not gone, just not here."
