Obituary of Virgil Kahl

A memorial service for Virgil Kahl, 89, of Milford, will be held on Tuesday, July 2, 2019 at 11:00 am, at First Lutheran Church in West Okoboji, Iowa. Visitation will begin one hour prior to the service at the church. Memorials will be given to Lakes Regional Hospice. Mr. Kahl passed away on June 26, 2019 at Accura Healthcare in Milford. Virgil August Kahl was born September 23, 1929, on a farm southwest of Rock Rapids, Iowa. Virg always said "I was the cause of the Great Depression in 1929!!" He attended rural country schools for eight years. He attended high school in Rock Rapids, and he was active in music and sports. He married Mary Louise Klahn on October 4, 1949. From this union there were three children: Riley, Jolene, and Merilyce. He attended college for a short time and then was employed two years in Rock Rapids working at a gas station and a hardware store. From 1951-1959, he farmed northwest of Sibley. In 1959, he purchased the bowling alley in Sibley, and continued to operate that until 1979. From 1963 to 1982, in the summers, he was a crop adjuster for Great American Insurance Company. In 1982, he took a full time position with Great American Insurance. For two years he was an assistant manager and for nine years he was the manager of the Des Moines office of the Farm and Crop division for Iowa and Nebraska. He retired in 1994 to Wahpeton, Iowa. His interests were music and all sports—especially golf. He golfed daily and at the age of 84 he parred the course at Woodlyn Hills. Virg is survived by two daughters: Jolene (Bruce) Leu of Milford, Iowa; and Merilyce (Gene) Ver Steeg of Sibley, Iowa. He has five grandchildren: Brad (Moira) Leu of Des Moines, Iowa; Chad (Carrie) Ver Steeg of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; Marshal Ver Steeg and special friend Rosie Torres of Hialeah, Florida; Mary Jo Connot of Rugby North Dakota; and Sandy (Brandon) Heithus of Milford, Iowa. There are eight great-grandchildren: Jake, Conor, Izak, and Ayden Ver Steeg; Dillon Marco; and Saige, Kason, and Braelyn Connot; and one baby Heithus due in August. He is also survived by his sister, Nina Kahl Finegan, Anchorage, Alaska. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers; four sisters; his wife, Mary Klahn Kahl; son, Riley Kahl; and granddaughters, Jamie Ann Leu and Megan Jean Leu.
